Italy energy costs surge amid international conflict

Rising energy and fuel costs are significantly impacting Italian households and businesses. Following the conflict in Iran, energy expenditures for Italian consumers and companies have increased by an estimated 16.5 billion euros compared to February averages.

Families are facing substantial financial pressure, with some estimates suggesting a family with two children could see annual spending rise by up to 1,415 euros due to inflation. In the agricultural sector, Coldiretti Marche reports that diesel prices have surged from approximately 0.85 euros to 1.75 euros per liter, prompting calls for regional intervention to support farmers.

Additionally, long-term projections from AIEL indicate that natural gas is expected to cost an average of 12.8 euros more per equivalent 15kg bag of pellet between 2020 and 2026. To mitigate these costs, MEP Denis Nesci has requested the European Commission to allow more flexible use of EAFRD funds to assist agricultural producers facing high production costs.
