Italy energy costs: rising gas prices impact households and businesses

Rising energy costs in Italy are creating significant financial pressure for both households and the hospitality sector as the heating season approaches. Wholesale gas prices have seen substantial increases, with the PSV index reaching approximately 0.936 €/Smc in mid-October, a significant rise compared to previous years. This trend is also affecting electricity prices due to the high reliance on gas-fired power plants.

In Tuscany, an average family is expected to spend approximately 972€ on gas alone for the winter season. Experts suggest that switching to more competitive market tariffs could save families around 289€.

The restaurant and pizzeria sector is particularly vulnerable, with energy costs cited as a primary concern for over 60% of operators. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have contributed to these market fluctuations, leading to warnings of potential spikes in utility costs for businesses.

To mitigate these impacts, ENEA has proposed a four-point strategy for residential energy efficiency. Key recommendations include maintaining an indoor temperature of 19°C—where every degree lower can save up to 10% on fuel—reducing heating duration, and minimizing thermal dispersion through better window and radiator management.
