Italy faces month of strikes starting October 2

Italy is facing a month of widespread labor strikes throughout October 2026, beginning with a major general strike on October 2. Proclaimed by the European Workers' Trade Union Confederation (Csle) and Fi-si, the initial mobilization affects multiple sectors, including railways, healthcare, schools, public administration, law enforcement, and agriculture.

The primary drivers for the protests are economic, with unions demanding lower prices for fuel and essential goods, reduced tax pressure, and wage increases to offset the rising cost of living. While the railway strike on October 2 is limited to a three-hour window between 11:00 and 14:00, Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) indicated that its services would remain regular.

The strike calendar continues with regional and sector-specific actions, including a 24-hour public transport strike in Genoa on October 3, a national strike of honorary magistrates from October 5 to 7, and various regional actions in Tuscany and Sicily. The month of industrial action is expected to conclude with a nationwide general strike on October 30.
