Italy transport and labor strikes July–September 2026
Overview
Labor unrest continued through August and into September 2026. In mid-August, the FAO COBAS union conducted a 120-hour national strike affecting heavy goods vehicle transport, while the OSP USB LAVORO PRIVATO union organized local logistics strikes in Ascoli Piceno. Additionally, unions in Calabria held a full-day strike in the trade and modern distribution sector on 15 August.
September is marked by widespread disruptions across rail, air, and cargo sectors. A major national railway strike is scheduled from the evening of 7 September through 21:00 on 8 September, involving the FS Group, Trenitalia, Trenitalia Tper, Trenord, and RFI, with potential impacts on Italo services. Workers are protesting wages, shifts, workload, and safety. Essential regional services are guaranteed during morning (06:00–09:00) and evening (18:00–21:00) windows. Passengers may seek refunds for Frecce and Intercity trains or reschedule trips. Regional train refunds must be requested by 24:00 the day before the strike.
Following the rail action, Captrain Italia workers are set to strike on 10–11 September. Aviation and maritime sectors also face mobilization: technical flight crew at Poste Air Cargo will conduct a four-hour strike on 11 September, and a maritime transport strike is planned for the same day. National strikes on 11 and 13 September are expected to disrupt air traffic nationwide, affecting flight crews and ground handling services. On 13 September, significant disruptions are expected as ADR Security personnel strike at Rome’s Fiumicino and Ciampino airports, while staff from Toscana Aeroporti, GH Toscana, and Consulta plan a stoppage at Florence and Pisa airports. A major national strike involving Enav and Techno Sky is set for 30 September, expected to disrupt air traffic management at hubs such as Linate and Malpensa.
