Italy fireworks use sparks wildfire warnings and local fires

Authorities and environmental groups are raising alarms regarding the use of fireworks during religious and patronal festivals in Italy due to the high risk of wildfires. In Sicily, the WWF Sicilia Centrale has issued formal warnings to mayors in the Caltanissetta province, including Bompensiere, Marianopoli, Montedoro, and Sutera, after fireworks were used during a period of high fire alert.

The organization notes that the combination of dry vegetation, flammable biomass, and specific topographical layouts in these areas creates a dangerous environment. This risk is exacerbated by a failure to clear uncultivated land and maintain firebreaks.

In Corigliano Rossano, a fire broke out at Contrada Santa Maria delle Grazie during a pyrotechnic display. Residents report that the property owner had issued multiple formal warnings to the municipality and police prior to the event, specifically citing the danger of dry vegetation to nearby olive groves and homes. Despite these warnings, the spectacle proceeded, resulting in a fire that devastated the hillside.
