Italy funds 9‑million upgrade of Sollicciano prison while promoting children’s rights charter
The Umbria regional government held a meeting led by welfare assessor Fabio Barcaioli with prison directors from Perugia and Terni to advance the implementation of the "Carta dei diritti" for children of detained parents. The charter, signed by the Ministry of Justice, the Children’s Rights Authority and the association Bambinisenzasbarre, calls for stable contact between incarcerated parents and their children and for coordinated support among penitentiary, educational, and social services.
Separately, the Department of Penitentiary Administration (DAP) announced the immediate seizure of several sections of the Sollicciano prison in Florence following a court decree. The department confirmed that €9 million allocated in the 2025 budget will be used for a comprehensive renovation of the facility, with urgent works slated to begin and a plan to transfer current inmates to other restructured prisons.
Both actions reflect broader Italian efforts to improve prison conditions and protect the rights of families affected by incarceration.
