Italy economy shows fragile growth amid energy and inflation risks

The Italian economy is showing signs of a fragile recovery. Confindustria has revised its 2026 GDP growth forecast upward to 1%, driven by investments and the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). However, growth is expected to slow to 0.6% in 2027 as the most intensive phase of PNRR implementation concludes and high energy costs persist.

Energy prices remain a critical vulnerability. Electricity wholesale prices in Italy are significantly higher than in neighboring Germany, France, and Spain. This energy crisis, compounded by international instability, has reportedly cost the Italian economy nearly 52 billion euros in real GDP and approximately 2,400 euros per family over the last four years.

Inflationary pressures are also impacting household stability. Confindustria has raised its inflation forecast for the year from 2.5% to 3.2%. This has led to a reduction in purchasing power, forcing many families to cut food budgets or switch to lower-quality products. In response, the 2027 budget proposal includes approximately 5 billion euros for families and 3.3 billion for businesses to support consumption and productivity.

Additionally, Istat reports that the unobserved economy in Italy reached 218.2 billion euros in 2024, representing 9.9% of the GDP, with irregular employment being a primary driver of this value.
