Italy grants unlimited electronic ID for seniors and plans digital driver licences

A law passed in February 2026 and converted in April 2026 gives Italian citizens aged 70 and over an electronic identity card (CIE) with unlimited validity. The application procedure remains unchanged; the CIEOnline system automatically sets the validity to “ILLIMITATA”. The card continues to be accepted for travel, while the embedded digital certificate still expires after ten years, requiring a new card for online public‑administration services.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has opened a public consultation on a comprehensive reform of the Road Code. The proposal would make the physical driving licence and vehicle registration optional, allowing police to verify drivers through digital databases. The reform aims to present a delegating law to Parliament in the autumn, simplify the fine system, and reduce the number of fine categories from 82 to about 21.
