Italy health authorities issue mushroom safety warnings
Public health authorities in Italy are emphasizing mushroom safety as the autumn foraging season begins. To prevent intoxications, the Ulss Dolomiti Food Hygiene, Nutrition and Safety Service, in collaboration with the Bresadola Mycological Association, is hosting educational meetings in Feltre and Sedico.
These sessions will focus on identifying edible versus poisonous species, understanding local growth environments, and recognizing common mistakes in identification. Experts will address toxicological aspects, explaining that cooking or preserving does not make poisonous species safe for consumption. The meetings will cover macroscopic and microscopic characteristics, as well as proper collection, transport, and storage methods.
Experts warn that foragers should not rely solely on personal experience, smartphone apps, or traditional myths—such as assuming a mushroom is safe if eaten by animals or if it lacks a strong odor. The safest approach is to avoid consuming any mushroom if there is any doubt. Foragers are encouraged to use local mycological inspectorates to have their specimens verified by qualified personnel.
