Italy health authorities promote safe mushroom foraging
Health authorities in Italy are issuing guidance and training opportunities to prevent mushroom poisoning during the autumn foraging season.
In Liguria, ATS Liguria – Area Sociosanitaria Locale 2 is reminding citizens not to consume wild mushrooms without professional verification. The agency warns that many toxic species closely resemble edible ones, often leading to intoxication when individuals rely on unscientific identification methods. To assist the public, the Mycological Inspectorate offers a free inspection service for mushrooms intended for self-consumption and provides 24-hour specialist availability to support emergency rooms in cases of suspected poisoning.
In Grottaglie, the Associazione Micologica Bresadola – Gruppo Micologico di Lizzano is organizing a training course on September 26 and 27. Authorized by Asl Taranto, the program includes theoretical instruction on species classification, safe harvesting techniques, and ecosystem roles, followed by a practical excursion to the Pineta Frantella to practice identification and responsible gathering.
