Italy healthcare workers demand protection following emergency room violence

Violence against healthcare workers in Italian emergency rooms has come under scrutiny following a recent incident at the Santa Maria Hospital in Terni. On the morning of September 23, a patient under police escort allegedly assaulted nurses with insults, threats, and physical aggression, eventually damaging medical equipment and throwing a computer. The staff were forced to flee the room to seek safety while awaiting carabinieri intervention.

Francesco Vaia, a representative of the National Authority for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and former Ministry of Health official, has called for systemic changes to address these issues. He emphasized that while violence is never justified, the healthcare system must better support emergency personnel. Vaia urged national and regional decision-makers to increase staffing, improve pay, and move away from the use of temporary ‘locum’ workers to ensure stability and professional satisfaction for permanent staff.

The Uil Fp Terni union highlighted the incident as a symptom of structural vulnerability, noting that the lack of a continuous police presence and the distance of police stations from emergency operating rooms exacerbate the risks faced by medical professionals.
