Severe storms and hail hit Italy as heatwave eases, orange alerts issued

After several weeks of record‑breaking heat, a cold front from the Atlantic moved across northern and central Italy on 2‑3 July 2026. The front triggered heavy rain, hail, strong winds and isolated tornadoes, prompting orange weather alerts in Veneto and Emilia‑Romagna and yellow alerts across much of the peninsula.

Hundreds of fire‑brigade crews were deployed in Milan, Venice, Bologna and other affected areas to clear fallen trees, secure structures and address flooding. The Emilia‑Romagna fire service recorded more than 800 interventions, while regional authorities reported power outages, landslides and road closures.

Temperatures fell 5‑6 °C, offering a brief respite from the extreme heat that had driven a rise in heat‑related health calls. The World Health Organization and Italy’s Ministry of Health warned that the heatwave had already caused several deaths, and the sudden stormy shift added new risks for vulnerable populations.

In Sicily, a yellow alert warned of intense showers, strong gusts and possible hail. Local municipalities, such as Formigine, activated emergency plans and quickly cleared debris, citing prior preventive work on at‑risk vegetation.
