Italy highlights melanoma prevention and children's skin care on World Skin Health Day
On World Skin Health Day (July 8), Italian oncologist Paolo Ascierto warned that melanoma cases in Italy total about 15,000 annually and are affecting younger people. He noted that immunotherapy now cures roughly half of metastatic melanoma patients, but early diagnosis and prevention remain crucial. He advised regular skin checks, use of high‑SPF sunscreen, hats and sunglasses, and avoiding excessive UV exposure, especially during heat waves.
Separate guidance emphasized protecting children's delicate skin. Recommendations include applying sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, dressing children in protective clothing, limiting sun exposure during peak hours, using gentle soaps and moisturizers, and maintaining hydration and a balanced diet. Parents should monitor for eczema, diaper rash, and other skin conditions, seeking pediatric or dermatological advice when needed.
