Italy honors victims of mafia violence through memorials

Commemorative events in Italy have honored two individuals killed by the mafia. In Noto, remembrance is held for Paolo Mirmina, a 23-year-old socialist unionist who was shot and killed on October 3, 1920. Mirmina, a leader for agricultural workers, was targeted by mafia-linked individuals while attempting to stop them from disrupting a political rally. A commemorative plaque was placed at the site of his death in 1944 to honor his defense of workers' rights.

In Terni, a plaque was unveiled at the San Giovanni school to honor Stefano Picerno, a firefighter killed during the 1993 Via Palestro bombing in Milan. Picerno was one of five innocent victims of the mafia car bomb. The memorial, organized by Libera Terni in collaboration with various local institutions, was accompanied by a walk of legality through the neighborhood to transform memory into a commitment to justice and civic responsibility.
