Italian commemorations for mafia victims
Overview
Commemorative initiatives in Italy have focused on honoring victims of mafia violence through various public memorials. In Agrigento, the CGIL organization planned the unveiling of a mural titled ‘Nel solco dei diritti, il riscatto di una terra che costruisce il futuro’ to serve as a symbol of legality and social responsibility for younger generations.
Other regional efforts included a remembrance in Noto for Paolo Mirmina, a socialist unionist killed in 1920, and the unveiling of a plaque in Terni for firefighter Stefano Picerno, who died in the 1993 Via Palestro bombing.
Recent commemorations in Sicily continue this focus on promoting a culture of legality. In Agrigento, a ceremony is scheduled for October 13, 2026, at the Church of Santa Croce to remember Pasquale Di Lorenzo. A former chief superintendent of the Prison Police and recipient of the Gold Medal for Civil Merit, Di Lorenzo was assassinated in an ambush in Porto Empedocle on October 13, 1992, during a period of mafia retaliation against law enforcement regarding the 41-bis prison regime.
In Palermo and Capaci, events from October 6 to October 9 mark the 40th anniversary of the death of Claudio Domino, an eleven-year-old killed by the mafia in 1986. Educational initiatives include book presentations and meetings at the Aula Bunker, as well as ‘Pupi Antimafia,’ a puppet theater performance by Angelo Sicilia intended to teach younger generations about Domino’s history.
