Italy hosts diverse events for Saint Francis 800th anniversary

Various cultural, religious, and artistic initiatives are being held across Italy to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi. These events span multiple regions and formats, including musical performances, art exhibitions, theological discussions, and theatrical productions.

In Assisi, the Assisi Pax Mundi 2026 festival includes a cantata performance at the Basilica of San Francesco. Other regional activities include a study day in Foggia focused on the saint's historical presence in the Capitanata region, and an exhibition in Arezzo titled ‘The Image of St Francis – From the Middle Ages to the Twentieth Century’. In Sanremo, the program features art history lectures and a musical, while Piedimonte Etneo has inaugurated the ‘Pater Seraphicus’ exhibition.

Spiritual and social themes are central to the commemorations. In Cremona, discussions have focused on the priority of the Gospel, while in Campobasso, a week of events emphasizes fraternity and social cohesion. In Milan, Opera San Francesco is hosting a diverse program including film marathons, culinary events, and dialogues on modern issues such as artificial intelligence and poverty.
