The seventh round of U.S.-mediated talks between Israel and Lebanon opened in Rome on 4‑5 August 2026. Delegations from both sides met at the U.S. embassy to discuss a framework that calls for a phased Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, the creation of pilot zones for Lebanese army deployment, and the disarmament of Hezbollah. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani urged the parties to continue in a constructive spirit, and the U.S. State Department said it remains fully committed to the process.

At the same time, Israeli military actions intensified. An explosion in the southern Lebanese town of Haddatha was carried out by the Israeli army on 5 August. The following day, an improvised explosive device detonated inside a booby‑trapped building in Majdal Zoun, killing two Israeli reservist soldiers and wounding four others. Israeli airstrikes on the town of Tibnin killed one civilian and injured twelve. Lebanese health authorities say Israeli attacks since 2 March 2026 have killed at least 4,333 Lebanese people and injured 12,250.

Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem condemned the negotiations, saying they would bring “shame and humiliation” to Lebanon. Israeli officials indicated they were weighing further strikes, while the United States intervened to limit escalation and keep the talks from collapsing.
