Israel-Lebanon negotiations resume in Rome amid Hezbollah opposition
A seventh round of direct talks between Israel and Lebanon began in Rome on 4 August 2026, hosted by Italy and mediated by the United States. The negotiations aim to implement the June 26 trilateral framework agreement, which calls for a phased Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, the expansion of Lebanese army control in the so‑called pilot zones, and the disarmament of Hezbollah.
Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem publicly condemned the talks, describing them as “shame, humiliation and disappointment” for Lebanon and accusing President Joseph Aoun of acting as an “ally of Israel.” Qassem also blamed the United States and Israel for a broader regional aggression. Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani urged a constructive spirit, while U.S. ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa warned that substantial technical work remains and stressed the need to protect civilians.
The talks are expected to run through 6 August, with the United Nations peacekeeping mission scheduled to end on 31 December 2026, after which Lebanese forces are to assume full security in the south.
