Italy implements digital literacy and security measures for seniors

In response to rising digital security concerns, initiatives are being launched in Italy to protect senior citizens from cyber threats and identity theft.

The municipality of Montesilvano has announced the return of the “Nonni Tecnologici” (Technological Grandparents) project for the 2026/2027 period. In collaboration with the Associazione Culturale Mondo Digitale, the program offers free digital literacy courses specifically designed for residents over 60. The curriculum focuses on smartphone usage, safe internet navigation, secure communication via email and video calls, accessing public administration services, and defending against online scams.

Separately, the INPS regional directorate in Sicily has issued a warning regarding digital identity theft targeting pensioners. Following reports of fraud, the institute is urging users to regularly verify their contact information, monitor email notifications—including spam folders—and remain vigilant regarding any unauthorized changes to login credentials or payment methods. INPS advises citizens to immediately report any suspicious activity to their local offices to prevent the fraudulent use of personal data.
