Italy implements measures to support olive oil industry

The Italian extra virgin olive oil sector is undergoing a significant transformation as producers attempt to balance rising demand with higher quality expectations. Italy remains a global leader, accounting for approximately 20% of the world market and exporting to over 160 countries, including major markets such as the United States, Germany, Japan, and Canada.

Industry stakeholders are emphasizing the importance of technological choices, such as gentle filtration, to preserve organoleptic qualities and secure premium market positioning. This is critical as the price gap between mass-market oils and premium products continues to widen.

In response to industry challenges, the Italian government has announced measures to support olive oil mills. These include the introduction of the ‘Masaf promissory note’ and potential financial aid to ensure adequate olive prices. Additionally, authorities aim to streamline the Sian registration process from six days to two and are working to increase consumer awareness regarding the consumption of authentic Italian extra virgin olive oil.
