Italy implements new EU directives on whistleblowing and pay transparency

New regulatory frameworks in Italy are enhancing workplace transparency and protection for employees, driven by European Union directives.

Under Legislative Decree 24/2023, whistleblowing systems are now mandatory for many medium and large private companies, moving beyond just public offices. These systems are designed to allow employees to report irregularities without fear of retaliation, ensuring that personal data is protected through rigorous legal procedures and GDPR compliance. The regulations aim to balance the need for legality with the confidentiality of the whistleblower.

Additionally, new rules regarding pay transparency are being implemented. Following EU Directive 2023/970, employers must provide greater clarity regarding compensation. Key changes include the requirement for job advertisements to state initial salaries or salary ranges and a prohibition on employers asking candidates about their previous pay history. Employees also gain the right to request information on average pay levels, broken down by gender, for similar roles within an organization.
