Italy implements new healthcare waiting list plan and biomedical funding
The Italian Ministry of Health has officially adopted the National Waiting List Management Plan (Pngla) for the 2026-2028 period. Published in the Official Gazette, the decree introduces a new model focused on analyzing health needs and improving service programming. Key strategies include using population classification models to identify unexpressed health needs and leveraging pharmacies as central service hubs for bookings, analytical testing, and telemedicine.
In a separate measure, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Economy and Finance have allocated 6 million euros to support university clinics for 2026 and 2027. These funds, totaling 3 million euros per year, are intended for the acquisition and use of advanced biomedical technologies and the strengthening of clinical research. The funding is specifically designated for university clinics that do not operate as corporate entities. To qualify, at least 40% of the eligible costs must be directed toward the purchase, rental, or leasing of biomedical equipment.
