Italy implements winter tire mandates and Lombardy diesel bans

Italy is implementing new seasonal and environmental driving regulations. Starting November 15, winter driving requirements will be in effect until April 15, 2027, in areas covered by specific ordinances. To comply, drivers must use approved winter tires (marked M+S or similar), snow chains, or certified textile socks.

Separately, Lombardy has confirmed a structural ban on Euro 5 diesel vehicles in municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, including Milan, Brescia, Monza, and Bergamo. Effective October 1, 2026, this restriction will apply to passenger cars from Monday to Friday, between 7:30 and 19:30. The ban will expand to include M2, N1, and N2 vehicle categories starting October 1, 2027. While other regions in the Po Valley have opted for alternative air quality measures, Lombardy will proceed with these specific diesel limitations.
