Italy launches 2026-2027 influenza and Covid-19 vaccination campaign
Italy has launched its 2026-2027 seasonal vaccination campaign for influenza and Covid-19. The Ministry of Health has initiated the rollout, with regional campaigns starting in areas such as Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, and Tuscany.
For the influenza component, epidemiologists estimate between 12 and 14 million cases this season. While total infections may decrease compared to previous years, experts warn that symptoms may be more severe due to the circulation of specific strains like A/H3N2 and A/H1N1. The vaccines have been updated following World Health Organization recommendations to include trivalent formulations.
The Covid-19 campaign utilizes new vaccines adapted to the XFG variant. Vaccination is being offered for free to high-risk groups, including individuals over 60, pregnant women, healthcare workers, and people with chronic illnesses.
Regional efforts vary in scale: Lazio has prepared 1.38 million doses, while Emilia-Romagna has approximately 1.3 million influenza doses and 150,000 Covid-19 doses available. In Puglia, pharmacies are also facilitating access to vaccines for influenza, pneumococcus, and herpes zoster to improve coverage rates among the elderly.
