Italy intensifies mosquito control to combat West Nile virus

Health authorities in Italy are intensifying efforts to combat the spread of the West Nile virus through coordinated prevention and mosquito control measures.

In the Naples region, ASL Napoli 2 Nord has established a task force involving doctors, veterinarians, local officials, and ecology services. This group aims to manage the virus, which is primarily transmitted through mosquito bites. The strategy includes conducting epidemiological investigations, deploying mosquito traps, mapping exposure sites, and performing disinfestation in areas with high humidity or uncultivated land. Local mayors from several municipalities, including Acerra, Calvizzano, Frattamaggiore, Qualiano, Quarto, and Villaricca, are participating in these preventive actions.

In Chieti, the municipal administration has moved up its scheduled mosquito control cycle following a confirmed case of the virus. New adulticide and larvicide treatments are scheduled to take place during nighttime hours to minimize disruption. Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed during treatment times and to prevent water stagnation in private gardens and outdoor spaces to reduce mosquito breeding sites.
