Italy introduces rent subsidy for separated parents

Italy is introducing a new rent subsidy specifically designed for separated or divorced parents with dependent children. The measure aims to assist those who no longer reside in the family home and must bear the cost of new rental agreements.

Under the 2026 Budget Law, a fund of 60 million euros has been established for the 2026-2028 triennium, allocating 20 million euros annually. The subsidy will cover 50% of rental costs, up to a maximum of 500 euros per month, with an annual cap of 6,000 euros.

To qualify, parents must have at least one dependent child under the age of 21, possess a valid lease agreement, and be up to date with any court-ordered maintenance payments. Eligibility will be determined by an annual Irpef income limit of approximately 35,000 euros rather than the ISEE metric. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is currently working on the implementing decree, with the call for applications expected in autumn and the first contributions potentially available by the end of 2026.
