Italy investigates nearly 1.5 billion euros in Reddito di cittadinanza fraud

Investigations by the Italian Social Security Institute (Inps) and the Guardia di Finanza have revealed that nearly 1.5 billion euros were improperly paid out through the 'Reddito di cittadinanza' (Citizenship Income) program.

Tens of thousands of recipients reportedly collected the subsidy without meeting the necessary requirements, often by omitting relevant income information. This occurred due to a lack of cross-referenced data checks during the program's implementation. The total financial impact on the state may approach 2 billion euros when considering all irregularities.

In response, Inps introduced the 'Cruscotto Isee corrente' in January, an IT tool designed for preventive control. This system crosses real-time data from citizen declarations with actual wealth and income archives to block potential false declarations at the source.
