Italy: Labor unions demand safety reforms after fatal farm accident
The death of 51-year-old agricultural worker Stefano Lacirignola has sparked calls for increased workplace safety and stricter inspections in Italy. The incident occurred on Monday, October 26, at an agricultural company located between Brindisi and Tuturano.
Preliminary reports suggest Lacirignola was struck by machinery while moving it inside a warehouse. Local police and the Spesal are currently investigating the exact dynamics of the accident.
In response, labor organizations including FLAI CGIL, CISL, and Rifondazione Comunista have expressed condolences to the victim's family and called for greater prevention, training, and effective controls. Gabrio Toraldo, general secretary of FLAI CGIL Brindisi, emphasized that safety must not be treated as a bureaucratic formality or a cost to be minimized, particularly in the agricultural sector where equipment use carries specific risks.
