Italy labor unions demand safety reforms following fatal accidents

Labor unions in Italy are raising alarms over rising workplace fatalities and safety risks. In the province of Latina, an analysis by Uil and the Eures research institute indicates a critical situation. For 2025, Latina recorded a fatal accident rate per 100,000 employees that is higher than both the regional average of 3.7 and the national average of 4.5. In 2025, the province reported 3,519 workplace injury reports, including 13 fatalities. In the first half of 2026, 1,864 reports were filed, including four fatal accidents.

In Puglia, a tragic road accident in Serracapriola has highlighted the dangers faced by seasonal workers. A van carrying nine workers overturned, resulting in the death of a Moroccan laborer and leaving eight others injured. The Uila Puglia union has called for urgent political action to address structural emergencies in the agricultural sector, specifically demanding the promotion and funding of safe, authorized transportation to prevent workers from relying on informal and unsafe transit methods.
