EU automobile market grows as electric vehicle share rises

The European Union automobile market is experiencing a period of growth and transition. According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), new car registrations in the EU rose by 4.5% in August 2026 to 708,211 units, marking the seventh consecutive month of growth. For the first eight months of the year, total registrations increased by 5.3% to approximately 7.55 million vehicles.

A significant shift toward electrification is evident. Battery electric vehicles (BEV) reached a 21.7% market share in the first eight months of 2026, up from 15.8% in the previous year. Hybrid vehicles remain the most popular choice, capturing 36.6% of the market. Conversely, the combined market share for internal combustion engines (petrol and diesel) has declined to 29%, down from 37.5% in the same period last year.

Individual model performance shows the Dacia Sandero leading European sales with 145,424 units, followed by the Volkswagen Golf with 133,249 units. In the electric segment, the Tesla Model Y regained its position as the top-selling electric vehicle in August with 10,281 registrations.

To support this transition, Italy has launched a new incentive program for 2026. The 'Bonus colonnine' provides subsidies for installing private electric charging infrastructure, covering 80% of eligible expenses. Individuals can receive up to 1,500 euros, while condominiums can claim up to 8,000 euros, as part of a 68 million euro fund allocated through 2030.
