Italy launches free RSV immunization campaigns for infants
Italian regions, including Piemonte and Toscana, have launched free voluntary immunization campaigns against the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) for the 2026/2027 season. The initiative aims to protect infants and young children from severe respiratory infections, such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia, during the peak virus circulation period from October to March.
In Piemonte, the regional health system has allocated up to 7.59 million euros for 25,000 doses. The strategy utilizes monoclonal antibodies administered via a single subcutaneous injection rather than a traditional vaccine. This passive immunization provides ready-to-use defenses for at least five months. Infants born between October 1 and March 31 will receive the dose at birth centers, while those born between April 1 and September 30 are encouraged to visit pediatricians.
In Toscana, the campaign targets children born between April 1, 2026, and March 31, 2027, as well as high-risk categories. Health officials aim to match or exceed the 93 percent coverage rate achieved in the previous season to reduce hospital admissions and emergency room visits.
