Italy expands genomic profiling and specialized training for cancer patients

In Italy, approximately 15,000 cancer patients annually are candidates for extended genomic profiling through Molecular Tumor Boards (MTB). These multidisciplinary teams translate molecular data into clinical decisions to optimize treatment strategies, particularly for advanced diseases. To address the need for specialized expertise, the University of Milan has launched a second edition of a specialized Master’s program in Molecular Pathology and Molecular Tumor Boards.

Regarding breast cancer, the National Observatory on Genomic Tests reports that while usage is increasing, a significant gap remains. In 2025, 9,800 genomic tests were performed for early-stage HR+/HER2- breast cancer, compared to an estimated 13,000 eligible patients. These tests are vital for assessing recurrence risk and determining if chemotherapy is necessary, potentially reducing unnecessary treatments by up to 48%.

Medical experts, including representatives from AIOM and Europa Donna Italia, emphasize the need for increased funding and the integration of these tests into the Essential Levels of Care (LEA) to ensure nationwide availability and reduce regional disparities caused by bureaucratic hurdles.
