Italy Leads Europe in Tourism Growth with Record Arrivals and Stays in 2026

Italy’s tourism sector showed strong expansion in 2026, outpacing its European peers. In March, arrivals reached 8.9 million and total presences rose to 26.9 million, marking year‑on‑year growth of 15.5% and 20.6% respectively. The country posted the highest OTA saturation rate in the region at 55.1%, up 8.2% from the previous year, and airport traffic exceeded 17 million passengers, a 4.9% increase. Online visitor sentiment improved to 87.5 points.

Projections for the summer months anticipate 171.8 million presences between July and August, with more than 89 million foreign tourists. The 2025 figures already showed 476.9 million presences, a 2.3% rise, and tourism contributed €237.4 billion to Italy’s GDP while employing 13.2% of the national workforce. Forecasts for 2026 expect about 141.2 million arrivals and 478.6 million presences. The sector is shifting toward proximity tourism, with emerging destinations gaining double‑digit growth and villages recording a 7% increase in stays, helping to relieve pressure on traditional hotspots. Major regions such as Lazio, Veneto and Campania continue to dominate visitor volume, while northern regions like Abruzzo, Molise, Friuli‑Venezia Giulia and Basilicata posted above‑average growth.
