Italy links Schengen reopening with Spain to Ceuta migration crisis
Italy is evaluating the reopening of the Schengen area with Spain, conditioning the decision on the evolution of the migration crisis in Ceuta. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated that border security and terrorism prevention remain top priorities for the government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Italy re-introduced border controls at ports and airports for travelers from Spain on July 31 following a massive irregular migration influx into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. In response, the Spanish government, led by Pedro Sánchez, suspended the Schengen agreement with Italy, implementing its own controls on Italian travelers until September 7.
Since August 8, the Spanish Ministry of the Interior has reported that over 4,600 travelers from Italy have been identified at various Spanish airports, including Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, and locations in the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands. The Italian government previously indicated that the suspension of controls would not be reviewed before August 15.
