Italy maintains summer medical ambulance service as a hospital orthopaedic ward closes

The regional health assessor Massimo Nicolò confirmed that the advanced nursing ambulance operating in Valle Scrivia will remain active through the end of summer. The service, launched in April 2026 to offset traffic‑related emergencies, recorded 37 night‑time interventions over 92 days, supporting the local emergency network.

Meanwhile, the San Leonardo hospital in Castellammare di Stabia will suspend its orthopaedics department from 25 July to 16 August. The closure, ordered by the director of the unit following a strategic directive from ASL Napoli 3 Sud, prompted a protest from the nurses’ union FIAS, which warned of patient transfers, longer wait times and a loss of essential care for the area’s one‑million residents.
