Italy mental health services see increased demand in Fermo and Tuscany

On World Mental Health Day, regional health data from Italy highlights rising demand for psychiatric services. In Fermo, the Ast reported 2,398 psychiatric visits during the first eight months of 2026, representing a 7.5% increase compared to the previous year.

In Tuscany, mental health departments have treated over 261,000 people. Notably, children and adolescents account for 96,889 of these cases, comprising more than one-third of the total. Reported issues include eating disorders, autism spectrum disorders, and learning or language difficulties.

Tuscan Health Councilor Monia Monni stated that mental health should not only be addressed during emergencies but through lifelong support. The regional strategy focuses on strengthening prevention, early interception, and integrating healthcare with social services to support autonomy and social inclusion.
