Rising mental health service demand in Italy

Overview

Mental health and addiction services in various Italian regions have experienced a rise in demand. In Parma, the integrated Department of Mental Health and Addictions recorded over 19,334 accesses in 2025, an increase of approximately 1,000 from the previous year. This period saw a 12.3% increase in pathological alcohol consumption and a rise in residential hospitalizations, including 70 units for minors at San Polo di Torrile. To address youth distress, a free 50-hour training program was launched for secondary school teachers to help identify psychological distress and behavioral addictions.

Regional data from Fermo and Tuscany further reflect these trends. In Fermo, psychiatric visits increased by 7.5% during the first eight months of 2026 compared to the previous year. In Tuscany, mental health departments treated over 261,000 people, with children and adolescents accounting for more than one-third of those cases. Reported issues in Tuscany include eating disorders, autism spectrum disorders, and learning or language difficulties. Tuscan Health Councilor Monia Monni emphasized a regional strategy focused on prevention, early interception, and the integration of healthcare with social services.
