Italy mosquito control debates intensify amid disease risks

Local authorities in Italy are facing debates over mosquito control strategies following outbreaks of diseases like Dengue and Chikungunya in regions such as Pisa, and significant mosquito proliferation in Sondrio.

In Pisa, the mayor has requested permission from the Tuscany Region to allow municipalities to perform preventive adulticide treatments. However, critics argue that increasing pesticide exposure is not a sustainable public health solution, noting that such chemical applications carry risks and require strict management to avoid uncontrolled distribution.

In Sondrio, local officials defended their mosquito management efforts, stating that the administration has implemented prevention measures since 2018, including thousands of treatments in drains and gutters. While the municipality has allocated funds for disinfection and monitoring, officials noted that regional funding from Lombardy is typically only granted in the event of actual viral infections, which have not occurred in Sondrio.
