Italy moves to erase fascist symbols from university and school sites

In Viterbo, the provincial council debated a motion presented by councilor Simone Brunelli of Tuscia Democratica calling for the complete removal of the inscription “Casa del Balilla” on the façade of the Mariano Buratti classical high school. The motion urges the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education, and heritage authorities to act without compromise, reaffirming constitutional principles rooted in the Resistance. Brunelli stated, “La scritta Casa del Balilla va completamente rimossa, senza rassegnarsi a soluzioni di compromesso.” Both incidents illustrate coordinated efforts in Italy to eliminate lingering fascist symbols from public institutions.
