Viterbo school fascist inscription controversy expands
Entities: University of Parma · Casa del Balilla inscription · Fabio Landini · Simone Brunelli · Liceo classico Mariano Buratti
Overview
Restoration work on the historic façade of the Liceo Mariano Buratti in Viterbo uncovered the original “Casa del Balilla” inscription, a relic of the fascist youth organization. Student groups, local communist activists and anti‑fascist associations protested, calling the display a revisionist affront to the memory of Resistance partisans and demanding its removal.
On 23 July 2026 the cultural association Luigi Petroselli organized a sit‑in at the school together with the provincial ANPI, students and other anti‑fascist groups. Protesters urged that the wording be removed or neutralised, citing restoration regulations and the school’s anti‑fascist heritage. The demonstration grew, with participants calling for parliamentary questions and broader public scrutiny of the decision.
The following day activists addressed a letter to Viterbo mayor Chiara Frontini, linking grievances over promised public‑water reforms with the demand to eliminate the fascist inscription.
On 27 July 2026 the Viterbo provincial council debated a motion presented by councilor Simone Brunelli (Tuscia Democratica) calling for the complete removal of the “Casa del Balilla” text. The motion urges the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education and heritage authorities to act without compromise, reaffirming constitutional principles rooted in the Resistance.
The same day the University of Parma reported a swastika graffitied on a professor’s office door and filed a formal complaint, describing the act as intimidation against anti‑fascist values. Officials framed both incidents as part of coordinated efforts across Italy to eliminate lingering fascist symbols from public institutions.
The Viterbo debate has intensified calls for parliamentary scrutiny and for the inscription to be either removed or neutralised, while local activists continue linking the issue to broader civic concerns such as water‑service reforms. Anti‑fascist groups and heritage authorities remain engaged in negotiating preservation, memory and the repudiation of totalitarian symbols.
