Italy: Municipalities adapt to electronic identity card transition

Italian municipalities are adjusting services to manage the transition from paper to electronic identity cards (CIE). Following a Ministry of the Interior directive, paper identity cards ceased to be valid for international travel as of August 3, though their validity for domestic use has been extended to January 31, 2027.

In Sesto Fiorentino, the registry office will reserve Wednesdays starting in September specifically for priority CIE issuance requests. Local officials noted the need for this measure to assist citizens in replacing outdated documents.

Meanwhile, in Raffadali, the registry office reported that it has eliminated waiting lists for CIE issuance. The municipality saw a 150% increase in issued cards compared to the previous year, reaching 2,633 issuances by August 1. To improve efficiency, the office implemented a system where staff personally manage the delivery of documents to the municipal office rather than relying solely on home mail delivery, assisting residents who face difficulties receiving registered mail.
