Italy names commissioners to accelerate Piombino steel plant relaunch
Minister Adolfo Urso met in Piombino on 3 July with regional president Eugenio Giani, mayor Francesco Ferrari and trade unions to advance the revival of the town’s steel plant. The government will appoint Giani as commissioner for the steel‑making project and Ferrari as commissioner for authorisations, aiming to speed up approvals and investment programmes with JSW Steel Italy and Metinvest, and to have the new facility operating by 2028.
Deputy Marco Simiani (PD) stressed that any agreement with JSW must guarantee full job protection for all workers, including those on long‑term lay‑off schemes, and called for immediate professional training and swift environmental permits. Unions remain cautious, demanding concrete guarantees before endorsing the Metinvest partnership.
