Italy workplace deaths rise to 701 in first eight months of 2026

Italy has seen a rise in workplace fatalities, with 701 deaths recorded in the first eight months of 2026, representing a 2.9% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Data from the Vega Engineering Observatory indicates that 504 deaths occurred during work activities, while 197 occurred during commutes. Injury reports have also increased by 5.4% to 404,809.

Regional disparities are significant. Calabria, Sicily, and Campania are classified as red zones, with mortality rates exceeding the national average by more than 25%. In Sicily, provinces like Trapani and Palermo show particularly high incidence rates. In Lombardy, Brescia and Lodi are noted for high mortality, while the manufacturing sector remains a high-risk area for injuries.

A concerning trend is the impact on foreign workers, whose mortality risk is reported to be more than three times higher than that of Italian nationals. Additionally, injury reports among women have seen notable increases in certain contexts, such as commuting.

In response to these figures, the association ANMIL has used the 76th National Day for Victims of Workplace Accidents to advocate for structural changes. These include the introduction of a specific crime of workplace homicide and the establishment of a national Labor Prosecutor's office to better coordinate safety investigations and enforcement.
