Italy workplace safety: 701 deaths and rising accident reports in 2026

On the 76th National Day for Victims of Workplace Accidents, Italian authorities and labor associations highlighted a concerning rise in workplace injuries and fatalities. Data from Inail and ANMIL indicate that in the first eight months of 2026, Italy recorded 701 workplace deaths and 404,809 reported accidents, representing a 5.4% increase in total reports compared to the previous year.

Regional data shows significant disparities. Calabria remains in a 'red zone' with mortality rates exceeding the national average by 25%, while the province of Cosenza reports a rate three times higher than the national average. In Abruzzo, reports of occupational diseases rose by over 18% in 2025, with manufacturing and construction being the most affected sectors.

In response to these trends, ANMIL is advocating for the legal establishment of 'workplace homicide' as an autonomous crime and the creation of a National Labor Prosecutor's Office. President Sergio Mattarella emphasized that workplace safety is a constitutional duty, while Labor Minister Marina Calderone pointed to Decree-Law no. 159 of 2025 as a key government measure to strengthen prevention and training.
