Italy offers mushroom recognition courses for foraging certification

Training courses are being offered in Italy to teach the recognition of epigeic mushrooms, a necessary step for citizens to obtain the regional certification required for legal foraging.

In San Severino Marche, the Unione Montana Potenza Esino Musone is organizing a 21-hour course throughout November. Following Regional Law n. 18/2022, the program aims to prepare participants for the mandatory exam to receive a foraging permit. Registration is open until October 31, with priority given to residents of the member municipalities of the Unione Montana if capacity is exceeded.

In Cesano di Roma, the Università Agraria di Cesano di Roma, in collaboration with the Gruppo Ecologico Micologico Alto Lazio (G.E.M.A.L.), is providing a theoretical and practical course. The curriculum includes lessons on ecology, specific fungal genera such as Amanita and Boletaceae, and the distinction between edible and toxic species. The program concludes with a field outing in a woodland environment to practice identification in situ.
