Italy opens probe into Israeli minister Itamar Ben‑Gvir over Gaza flotilla activist allegations

Italian prosecutors have opened an investigation into Itamar Ben‑Gvir, Israel’s minister of national security, on suspicion of torturing and kidnapping activists from a Gaza aid flotilla intercepted in international waters. The probe focuses on alleged abuse of Italian citizens who were among the roughly 430 participants, as well as other foreign nationals.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the treatment as “unacceptable,” summoned the Israeli ambassador for explanations and called for EU sanctions against Ben‑Gvir. France has already barred him from entry. Ben‑Gvir responded by posting a video showing the detained activists kneeling with bound hands and said, “I will not hesitate and will continue proudly standing with our fighters.” The activists had intended to break Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid.

The investigation could lead to formal charges and a request for trial if the allegations are substantiated, adding diplomatic tension between Italy and Israel and prompting broader international criticism of Israel’s handling of the flotilla.
