Italy: Opposition criticizes proposed electoral law
Anna Ascani, Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies and Democratic Party deputy, has strongly criticized a proposed electoral law during a session at Montecitorio. She described the legislation as a ‘political and institutional shambles’ driven by the right-wing's fear of losing voter support.
Ascani raised several specific concerns regarding the proposal, including the lack of dialogue with opposition parties and the potential for the law to undermine democratic processes. She specifically highlighted the removal of guarantees for gender parity under Article 51 of the Constitution, noting that the new mechanism would eliminate balance between men and women in the selection of lead candidates.
Furthermore, she argued that the proposed majority prize is disproportionate and intended to allow the ruling coalition to occupy guarantee bodies and influence the election of the Head of State. She characterized the law as a mechanism designed to protect the current majority from voter judgment through a system where approximately 80% of candidates would be appointed rather than chosen through preferences.
