Italy orders new trial in Giulia Tramontano murder case

The Italian Court of Cassation has ordered a new trial for Alessandro Impagnatiello regarding the 2023 murder of his pregnant partner, Giulia Tramontano. The legal proceedings will specifically focus on whether the killing was premeditated, a factor that was excluded during the appeals process which had previously upheld a life sentence.

Impagnatiello, a former bartender, was involved in the death of the 29-year-old Tramontano and her unborn child in Senago. Investigations revealed that he had allegedly administered rat poison to the victim over several months before killing her with more than 30 stab wounds and attempting to dispose of the body.

While the defense argued that the timeline of the attack precluded a premeditated plan, the prosecution maintains that the choice of weapon and subsequent actions indicate a calculated act. The case remains a significant symbol of domestic violence in Italy.
