Legal proceedings in Giulia Tramontano murder case

Overview

The Italian Court of Cassation previously ordered a new trial for Alessandro Impagnatiello to re-evaluate whether the 2023 murder of his pregnant partner, Giulia Tramontano, was premeditated. While a life sentence had been upheld, the aggravating factor of premeditation had been excluded in earlier rulings.

Following the mandate to re-examine the case, the Milan Court of Assize Appeal has now officially recognized the aggravating factor of premeditation. The court cited evidence including Impagnatiello’s internet searches regarding the disposal of a body and the use of lethal substances. This follows prosecution claims that the defendant had been administering rodenticide to the victim since December 2022.

Impagnatiello, who is currently serving a life sentence in a Pavia prison, will now also serve three months of daytime isolation. The victim’s family, including her sister Chiara Tramontano, expressed relief in court, describing the verdict as a “just recognition of the crime.”

In a separate legal development, a court convicted Laura Ciuladaite, Impagnatiello’s sister-in-law, for fraud. Ciuladaite purchased the vehicle used to transport the victim’s body in an attempt to shield the asset from being used to pay court-ordered damages to the Tramontano family. The court ordered Ciuladaite to pay approximately 25,000 euros in compensation to the victim’s relatives.
