Italy pension requirements projected to increase through 2029

Changes in life expectancy are expected to drive a progressive increase in pension requirements in Italy between 2027 and 2029. According to INPS guidelines, those seeking old-age pensions will face rising age thresholds. For example, in 2027, the requirement for old-age pension is set at 67 years and one month with at least 20 years of contributions.

Individuals born in 1962 may be particularly affected, as they could face a cumulative increase of up to six months in requirements by the time they reach the age of 67 in 2029. While those born in 1960 may only see a one-month increase, those born in 1961 could face a requirement of 67 years and three months in 2028.

For early retirement (pension anticipata ordinaria), requirements are also shifting based on contribution years: 42 years and 11 months for men and 41 years and 11 months for women. Legal protections exist for those who have already met the requirements before a rule change occurs, even if the actual payment date (decorrenza) falls in a subsequent year with higher thresholds.
