Italy phases out paper identity cards for SPID and travel

New regulations in Italy are phasing out the use of paper identity cards, impacting both physical identification and digital services. Under European regulation 1208, paper identity cards will no longer be valid for SPID (Public Digital Identity System) access starting August 3. This change significantly affects millions of users, particularly those using PosteID, who must update their profiles with an electronic identity card (CIE), driver's license, or passport to avoid losing access to public administration portals like INPS and the Revenue Agency.

Furthermore, the paper format is no longer valid for international travel, regardless of the expiration date listed on the document. Within Italy, unexpired paper cards will be restricted to essential services—such as healthcare, social security, insurance, and public administration—until January 31, 2027. While existing contracts signed before August 3, 2026, remain valid for their specific purposes, citizens are urged to book appointments for the new electronic identity card (CIE) immediately to avoid delays caused by full appointment schedules.
